St Josephs 4-3 Wigton Moor.
Sunday 5th Sept 2010.
The first of two pre season friendlies against U-14 opposition saw a new look Wigton Moor lose narrowly to St Josephs of Pontefract. With the prospect of two long term absences, manager Brian swapped his players around to find a balance in the team and came away relatively satisfied with a much needed game to introduce the new players in the squad.
The first five minutes saw Wigton Moor come close to scoring on three occasions with Charlotte supporting the attack with a crisp shot just wide of the post, a low shot by Alice, spilling out of the goalies hand and nearly rolling into the net and Katy laying on Aislinn to shoot just wide. Just as though Wigton looked as were taking control, a through ball by their No.14 found the powerful No.9 run into space, and with our defence hesitating, had time to drill the ball home after seven minutes. First impressions of ‘against play’ were soon dismissed as their No.2 gradually came into the game, especially in the second half. Three minutes later, it became 1-1 when Alice found Emily near the edge of the box and shielded away her marker to lay the ball onto Katy who wasted no time in shooting wide of the keeper. It nearly became 2-1 to Wigton when a long throw by Charlotte found Emily controlling the ball well and shooting hard on target and the keeper parried it down and reacted quickly when she saw Katy racing to tap it in. More good work between Aislinn, Alice and Katy saw the goalie in action again, this time Emily being the poacher. The new goalkeeper delivered a long high goal kick that bounced awkwardly over Charlotte’s head and Amy nipped in, and with Annie in support, used her to set up another attack for Emily on the left wing and with Aislinn pointing for the ball to be played two yards ahead in centre spot, just failed in her pass-an interesting development. Another high kick bounced over and Claudia timed her run to perfection to cut out the waiting No.14 & 9 and then Charlotte cleared another high ball with a confident header. Annie moved more into to central position and before she settled in, St Josephs attacked the left wing with their No.12 & 6 linking well and suddenly the ball was in the box where the No.2 appeared at lightning speed and Esther had no chance. A copycat move saw the No. 2 in position but Esther’s great anticipation saw her racing off her line and gave St. Josephs a high ball, and with Emily left and Katy right, Aislinn took advantage of the back header but was soon surrounded by the defence.

Some important information for you, Thursday 12th August- training as usual and last chance to hand in Wigton forms and subs payments before deadline, after this they will need to be sent to me. NO TRAINING on 19th or 26th August, but keep yourselves fit- I've just seen in Denmark what a difference being able to keep running throughout a whole game can make! Thursday 2nd September- Friendly game against Tingley where we always play them now. 6:00pm meet for a 6:30 start. 11-a-side if enough girls are there. Saturday 4th/Sunday 5th September- possible friendly against Crossley Belles, will confirm with time and venue later. Tuesday 7th September- friendly against Wigton Moor Under 13s at Wigton. Meet around 5:30/6:00 although exact time to be confirmed. Thursday 9th September- final training session before the start of the season at the slightly earlier time of 6:30 now that the nights are drawing in!. Full attendance if possible please! Saturday 11th/Sunday 12th- first game of the new season. Fixtures will be announced on WRGFL website at the start of September. There are 12 teams at under 14 this year, and the format will be officially 9-a-side. It will probably be a single league of 12 teams giving us 22 league games as well as the cup, and we also have the 11-a-side Under 14 County Cup this season too. |
